How Offset Printers Make A Job Done

Offset Printing Process Step by Step

Unlike a digital or simple laser, offset printing process requires fairly substantial investment for setting up the business and equipment. When the infrastructure is bring into place once, the rest of printing job is not too expensive. There several other related efforts are required in offset setup. Pre-printing need to be carried out before the actual process is started in which the artwork is created.

To make do with the printing job, offset printer works in a simple manner. There are 3 cylinders having separate duties when the printing job is running on its way. The first cylinder is mounted with the printing plate on which the image of the source document is printed. The image usually exists in a negative form. 

This way coming closer in contact with the plate, the first cylinder is inked and transfers the ink to the 2^nd cylinder when it rotates. As they are both closer to each other, the image is mounted with a rubber blanket on the 2^nd plate in a reverse form.

The 3^rd cylinder also rotate closer to the 2^nd cylinder, where both of them collide and the reverse form of image is mounted on the 3rd/impression cylinder where it is reversed again and stay right.

During the process of mounting the image from printing plate to the first cylinder, offset printing uses unique characteristics during that time. While the image and non-image areas stay on the same surface level there. Chemical fact is used here, because oil and water doesn't mix together while been on the same surface level. 

On the plate, image portion is coated with lacquer which attracts ink and the non-image portion is coated with gum that attracts water only. When the plate come closer to the first cylinder for damping it in water and to brush the lacquer portion with ink, water have no impact on lacquer here.

Offset Press Types:

Sheet-fed offset and web-fed are the primary types of offset printing press. In Sheet-fed offset press, the prints are carried out on a single sheet of paper because the paper sheets are fed to the press only one at a time. 

While in case of web-fed offset, printing is carried out on a single and continuous sheet of paper that is fed from a large role placed downside. Later, the entire sheet is cut into individual sheets of appropriate size.
